To get this behavior:

parser->setFeature(XMLUni::fgDOMWhitespaceInElementContent,
   false);

Parser can fill in default attributes:

XMLCh* attribute_value
   = price_element->getAttribute("currency");
   // Gets "USD" if no currency specified
